Listen, I’ve always been SUPER interested in cults and how people can fall into the trap of becoming a cult member. Lately I’ve been on a cult documentary binge and something that has been talking about quite a bit is “NLP” and how it is used by cult leaders. I felt it was my due diligence to create a blog post about it and the dangers of using it. Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that seeks to understand and influence human behavior through the examination of communication patterns, language, and thought processes. While NLP has gained popularity for its therapeutic applications, it is essential to explore the potential dangers associated with its use. In this blog post, we will delve into the concerns surrounding NLP, including ethical considerations, manipulation risks, and the importance of critical awareness.

Manipulation and Unethical Influence:
One of the primary concerns with NLP lies in its potential for manipulation. The techniques employed in NLP can be powerful tools for influencing others, and when used unethically, they may compromise the autonomy and decision-making abilities of individuals. Practitioners must be cautious about the ethical implications of using NLP in various contexts, including personal development, sales, and therapy.
Lack of Scientific Validation:
While proponents of NLP argue for its effectiveness, the lack of robust scientific evidence supporting its principles raises skepticism. Critics argue that some NLP practices lack empirical validation and may be built on pseudoscientific foundations. It is crucial for individuals to approach NLP with a discerning mindset and to be aware of the potential discrepancies between anecdotal claims and scientific support.
False Memory Implantation:
NLP techniques, especially those used in therapeutic settings, may inadvertently contribute to the creation of false memories. The process of regression and suggestion employed in certain NLP practices could lead individuals to recall events that never occurred. This poses serious ethical concerns, as false memories can have lasting psychological implications. THIS is absolutely terrifying and I cannot tell you the amount of times I have seen this cult documentaries which is so damaging for so many people.
Overemphasis on Positive Thinking:
Some NLP teachings emphasize the power of positive thinking and the impact of language on shaping one's reality. While cultivating a positive mindset can be beneficial, an overemphasis on positive thinking without addressing real-world challenges may lead to unrealistic expectations and a neglect of critical problem-solving skills. I am all for supporting how you think about things/talk to yourself dictating how you feel. However, there is also a sense of delusion with NLP and how far they take that sentiment.
Cultural Sensitivity and Appropriation:
NLP techniques may not be universally applicable across cultures, as communication styles and linguistic nuances vary. Practitioners need to be mindful of cultural differences and avoid imposing NLP practices that may not align with diverse belief systems. The risk of cultural appropriation and insensitivity underscores the importance of adapting NLP to respect individual and cultural diversity.
Commercial Exploitation:
In certain contexts, NLP is marketed as a quick-fix solution for personal and professional success. This commercialization raises concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals seeking improvement in various aspects of their lives. Caution is necessary to avoid falling victim to misleading promises and exaggerated claims surrounding the benefits of NLP.
Potential for Self-Deception:
Individuals engaging in self-help NLP practices may be susceptible to self-deception. The emphasis on positive affirmations and visualization may lead individuals to believe in the effectiveness of these techniques without critically evaluating their true impact. It is essential to approach NLP with a balanced perspective and a willingness to question its outcomes.
While Neurolinguistic Programming has gained popularity for its purported benefits in personal development and communication, it is crucial to approach it with a critical eye. Acknowledging the potential dangers associated with NLP, including manipulation, false memory implantation, and cultural insensitivity, allows individuals to navigate this psychological approach responsibly. As with any tool or methodology, awareness, ethical considerations, and a discerning mindset are essential to ensure that the practice of NLP aligns with the well-being and autonomy of those involved. I am always in support of self-exploration, I just urge you to be cautious and aware of what you are using/learning about!
